Anton Vedenin's name is inside a safe I have just spent an hour opening.
The book is bound in dark red cloth and lies on the bottom shelf, where Dmitri Saran told me there would be nothing worth keeping. I know that hard slant of black letters. Anton signed my father's birthday card last year; while everyone else wrote something embarrassing about turning fifty-three, he just put his name. Dad kept the card on the mantel for three months.
